Overview
A 40-page photo essay on river ecosystems, shot over eighteen months. The photography was excellent and the previous layout had crammed it four-up to a page, which turned a slow subject into a contact sheet.
Approach
One image per spread, minimum. Captions moved off the image and onto the following page, so you have to turn to find out what you just looked at. Margins widen progressively through the essay as the river widens, which nobody will consciously register and everybody will feel.
Outcome
The essay was reprinted as a standalone edition. The progressive margin device has since been reused for two more of the magazine's long-form pieces.
